Senior Photonic Design Engineer – PIC / Datacom Transceivers
California, USA
$170,000 – $220,000 + equity
Our client is a photonics startup working on next-generation coherent optical interconnect technology for AI data centres. They are building something genuinely novel and need a Senior Photonic Design Engineer to own PIC design end-to-end, from simulation and layout through packaging, integration, and validation.
The role:
You will lead the design, simulation, and optimisation of high-performance passive and active photonic components for next-generation datacom transceivers. This is a full-lifecycle role. You will own DOE-driven device design, layout, packaging integration, system-level modelling, test methodology definition, and reliability/failure analysis. You will work closely across the organisation and contribute directly to shipping production-ready photonic solutions.
What you’ll own:
- Design, simulation, and optimisation of passive and active photonic components (RSoft, Lumerical, HFSS, EMPro, COMSOL, Sentaurus, Silvaco)
- Design of Experiments (DOEs) to optimise photonic components
- Layout design for high-speed optical transmitters and receivers (GDS Factory, Luceda IPKISS, OptoCompiler)
- System-level simulations integrating simulated and real test data (OptSim, VPI)
- Assembly, packaging, and integration of PICs with electronic components on PCBs
- Test plan definition and execution for photonic components and PICs
- Reliability studies and failure analysis for photonic components, PICs, and optoelectronic assemblies
What you’ll need:
- MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field
- Experience designing, testing, and integrating photonic components for telecom or datacom transceivers: lasers, MZMs, photodiodes, passive components
- Track record delivering photonic components and PICs into product
- Hands-on experience developing and executing test plans for PICs
- Experience with PIC product packaging, testing, and qualification
- Proficiency in the simulation and design tools listed above
- High-speed modulator and detector design/test experience a plus
- Yield, reliability, and failure analysis experience a plus
