Welcome to the jungle! But instead of fun and games, my client has data projects and programmes that have no way of being reported on. As a result, success can’t be measured or tracked. Similarly, collaboration across teams if proving difficult and project managers are having issues fully understanding what’s going on within other projects across the business.

My client is looking to take on a Data Team Operations Manager/Portfolio Manager/PMO Manager, call it what you will but in essence, it’s a chief organiser! You will be in charge of defining progress for a number of key projects, building reports and making it clear what is happening across the business so the CDO has visibility.

You will identify, for multiple projects, what the key milestones and priorities are and make sure they are tracked and reported on. You will identify the pipeline of projects and tasks so the CDO can allocate the resource. The structure is the keyword, you will add structure!

I’m looking for someone who can build relationships easily with senior stakeholders across the data team. There a friendly bunch but could probably be accused of being a bit “old skool” in approach. You will need to highlight the benefits of reporting and status tracking to them, so it is engrained and followed moving forward.

From a tooling perspective, you will be asked to bring in a collaboration/project tracking tool. Jira is used within the business at the moment, but not widely. Is it the best tool for the job? You will need to asses and recommend new tooling if necessary. Therefore, experience running PoC’s for similar tooling (Confluence, Slack etc.) is an advantage. Because you will be dealing with data teams experience working as part of/with developers, engineers, data scientists is very much an advantage.

You will also line manage a team of BA’s, ¾ of whom are remote. They work on the data projects and can certainly help you embed processes within their teams.

So in summary, chief organiser, project tracking tooling experience, embedding processes, relationship builder/manager and ideally line management experience BUT happy for this to be a step up for someone if they have the hunger.
